In order to gain an understanding of the Scottish Whiskey market in the UK and internationally, research on the subject must be undertaken.
To gain the information a collection of many materials were used such as; * Mintel research database – Publications, journals, news articles * Academic Publications – Available through library resources.
These resources became beneficial as collectively the lack of knowledge about the market was unknown to us. However with the abundance of information available it became difficult to select the correct material to use for our report.
Another factor that became apparent was the lack of up-to-date information. This was due to Mintel reports being somewhat out of date.

Why do some countries shine in international competition while others fail? That is the question that arises Michael Porter on the first page of his book
The Competitive Advantage of Nations (1990). Why few decades South Korea or other Asian countries (the "four dragons" and today the "five tigers") experienced such economic development while others stagnated or even regressed countries despite their efforts?
According to the author, ownership and control of a competitive advantage in the international arena that allows a country to meet with success, to the extent that this benefit is held in a free market system and free competition.
Diamond Porter has four branches, which is identified as factors related to advanced competitive advantage: This is the status of the demand, the relationship with industry support (logistics, distribution), the state factors and differences in strategy, structure and rivalry of companies. Porter argues that countries are more likely to succeed in industries where the national diamond is most favorable.
Factor conditions: In general, as a country is not "fully" developed, the basic factors outweigh the factors advanced. Here, we make the difference
