INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE OF ATTACHMENT
The Government of Ghana in 1992 directed all Polytechnics in the country to run tertiary programmes that were relevant, up-to-date in technology, and forward looking in approach.
The White Paper issued by the Government stated that the Polytechnics have a distinct and important role to play in middle-level manpower development and that programmes and courses were to be offered at the middle-level training leading to the award of Higher National Diplomas but not departing from syllabi dedicated practical training. The provision of such programmes will complete the cycle of technical education and provide a capacity for higher-level technician training and practical research. (Ministry of Education, 1993).
The government in collaboration with the tertiary institution authorities’ instituted industrial attachment as part of students training programme. The idea is to help students acquaint themselves with practical skills and also see the need to appreciate classroom work and encouragement in efficient learning. Practical attachment is thus a way of exposing students’ to become professionals and self-employed after graduation.
In partial fulfillment for the award of Higher National Diploma (HND), students are required to undertake industrial attachment at the various industries in the country and come out with a comprehensive report.
