Introduction and history :
The eastern half of the island of New Guinea - second largest in the world - was divided in 1885 between Germany (north) and the UK (south. The latter area was transferred to Australia in 1902, which occupied the northern portion during World War I and continued to administer the combined areas until independence in 1975. A nine-year secessionist revolt on the island of Bougainville ended in 1997 after claiming some 20,000 lives.

Papua is located in Oceania; it is a group of islands including the eastern half of the island of New Guinea between the Coral Sea and the South Pacific Ocean. The area of land is 452,860 sq km it is about the size of California. It has less land border lines then coastlines and on the land, there are mostly mountains. The climate of Papua New Guinea is tropical. There is the northwest monsoon (December to March), and the southeast monsoon (May to October). There are active volcanism situated along the Pacific, the country is subject to frequent and sometimes severe earthquakes, mud slides and tsunamis.

Papua New Guinea has 6,057,263 inhabitants. The median age is 21.7 and the Life expectancy is at 57 years. The birth rate is 27.55 births for 1,000 of the population and the death rate is 6.86 deaths for 1,000 of the population. Only 12 percent of the total population lives in an urban zone. The Infant mortality rate is 45.23 deaths for 1,000 of live births. The total fertility rate is 3.62 children born per woman. There are 54 000 people living with HIV or AIDS (vih ou sida). Why are there so many deaths? Because of bacterial diarrhea, hepatitis A, typhoid fever dengue fever and malaria.
The indigenous population of Papua New Guinea is one of the most heterogeneous in the world; PNG has several thousand separate communities, most with only a few hundred people; divided by language, customs, and tradition, some of these communities have engaged in
