In my opinion, we should not ban the tobacco inside the company. In fact, most of advertising revenue comes from tobacco brands. Indeed, the company may suffer from considerable consequences if we decide to adopt this management policy.
A reminder: the satellite TV companies are the fastest-growing and most profitable parts of the group. Up to 25% of our advertising revenue comes from tobacco advertising. If we forbid the cigarettes in the company, customers could break their contract because our company policy doesn’t match their corporate values and even with their products. It will have direct consequences on the financial health of the group, as you can see thanks to this graph.
The first graph represents our actual advertising revenue. Except the decrease in 2008 and 2009 because of the crisis, our revenue is better than acceptable, and this is due to tobacco advertising.
The second graph represents the forecasts if we ban the tobacco advertising. As you can see, without tobacco advertising, our revenue will decrease highly because tobacco companies pay a big price to have their advertising in our channels.
So if our advertising revenue will decrease, our turnover will go down too.
Moreover, after the ban of tobacco in the company and then in advertisings, what the ban will be? I think the alcohol advertisings for health reasons or also car advertisings because of the environment.
Secondly, about the ban on smoking in the company, I think it’s not a good idea for employees because people who work for Satellite TV, especially journalists have a very stressful job and they need to smoke to evacuate their stress. They are the heart of the Satellite television. They work many hours per day and they have very good results. Cigarettes characterize the world of journalism. So we cannot forbid them to smoke. Maybe we can do special spaces for smokers. Like that, they could smoke without disturb non-smokers.
