The reception commentaire
The document I’m going to speak about is an excerpt from a novel entitled Dishonoured written by Maria Barrett an English novelist in 1996.Maria began worked in high finance and PR in the city of London following the success of her first novel « Elle » she’s decided to devote herself solely to her passion of writing. From then on she mostly publish Romances and family saga like Dangerous Obsession or Deceived. She has raised the British colonization in India and the criticism of this plan by the younger generation. The text is built around three charismatic characters. The story takes place in the late 1850’s right after the revolte in 1857. Firstly we’ll see who plays the role of authority, the colonel and his Victorian wife then Indrajit Rai a royal jeweller which welcomes the colonel, and his son Jagat who is against the colonel and British rule in India.
So first of all the text begins with the colonel and his wife called Alicia, she accompany her husband to a reception hosted by Indrajit Rai a royal jeweller to the Maharajah of Jupthana. She’s actually doesn’t speak, she’s there for the deco, her role is to reassure her husband and be sensitive, caring with him because she understands him, when the colonel feel something she can feel it too line six « Alicia felt the colonel stiffen beside her at the sight of such native opulence and placed a pale cool hand on his arm reassuringly » She is a Victorian woman, a showcase who lived through her husband, she is a public relation agent for her husband and when the scene become political she disappears because she has no politics opinions only her husband have these opinions and there is no precise description because nobody really looked at her in this scene she ‘s not the important characters. She has only a symbolic place here.
So the colonel, is a military men, he have rules and respect then, he sticks to the rules precisely, he’s punctually he comes at seven o clock precisely (line 2).
