Life is one of those things you can’t refuse, it is given without you choosing it, it is put on you, and it brings so many things to one and so few to another. Some are be born in a rich Parisian family; others walk their first steps in the dusty streets of Rio, yet all can experience the same plenitudes of Life, as life transcends money, education, family, love etc… It is a freely given gift to be able to breathe each day, walk the steps of your forefathers, to have a conscience, a brain, and a very useful body yet all these seem to be lost in the tumult and expectancies that come with this free gift. The priorities of man have changed drastically in this last century nevertheless in the deepest parts of man’s soul there is still and there shall always be this desire to love, be loved, live, enjoy life, and be satisfied. In the twenty-first century where advertising reigns, the true gifts of life seem to be slowly forgotten, being replaced by ephemeral and superficial products. Sadly with modern day advertising, the general public of the East and the West seem to think that life is only about the continual accumulation of goods that bring sudden but only fleeting joy. These goods, such as cars, houses and the latest gadgets bring merely temporary satisfaction and can easily be destroyed by the forces of nature as recent natural disasters demonstrate; true satisfaction cannot be based upon such things, because they always lead to wanting more and more… I remember one of the first things in my childhood to really leave a mark on me, was when we spent a week on a Fijian Island. We were invited to spend Christmas lunch with the local tribe. We arrived for the meal to find a mat laid on the floor with only knives as cutlery.
