The Movie “Gung Ho”

Gung Ho is an American comedy produced in 1986 by Ron Howard. The Chinese title means “Work Together”. This movie is a perfect example of “culture gap” at work.
It’s about a failed American auto plan taken by a Japanese automaker. In fact, a local auto plant in Pennsylvania which supplied most of the town’s jobs has been closed for nine months. The main actor, Hunt Stevenson is in charge of negotiating the reopen of his organization. For this reason, he goes to Tokyo to convince the Assan Motors Corporation. The Japanese company agrees and decides to “save the town” but in Japanese work’s way: no union, low wages, high quality control and new criteria of efficiency.
Moreover, the Director of Assan, sends his nephew Oishi, the new executive director so as to give him a final chance. He has to redeem himself by making the American plant a success.
With the new rules, the American workers are lost and Hunt is losing control of them therefore the “culture clash” becomes greater.
Hunt and Oishi makes a deal in order to solve the problem i.e. the production of 15 000 cars in one month. If they success, workers will all be given raises and new jobs will be created so as to save the town. But Hunt knows that it’s impossible so he is lying and tell to his colleagues that they have to produce 13 000 cars. Nevertheless, workers discover the truth.
So, Hunt decides to explain that the Japanese has a work ethic completely different. Workers to reach the goal of 15 000 cars, achieve a number of incomplete cars. The ruse fails but the Director or Assan is impressed by the collision of the team and declare the goal
