The term bear of Pyrenees appoints the population of brown bears (Ursus arctos) living on the French hillsides and Spanish of Pyrenees. It is not about a full species and it would be preferable to speak about " brown bears in Pyrenees ".
Originally present in a big part of Europe, we still found bears in the Alps, Pyrenees, Jura and Vosges, in the 18th century.
From the beginning of the 20th century => No more bear outside Pyrenees (between 70 and 150 animals in this period)
In the 80's => 15 bears
In the 90's => 5 bears
The government decides to launch a program to restore a population of viable bear by introducing into Pyrenees, the Slovenian brown bears, close to the Pyrenean considering their genetic heritage and of their lifestyle.
The presence of the bear raises problems in the herds which do not benefit from measures of proctection.
After the death very mediatized of the last pyrenean bear, shot down by a hunter on November 1st, 2004, we attend an important mobilization around the bears of Pyrenees, between those who wish its protection and those who oppose to it.
The Bear of Pyrenees is an opportunist omnivore with clear dominant vegetarian. In Pyrenees, the breeders perceive it rather as a carnivore, but the study of its diet shows well the variety of its food. To date, no significant impact of the predation on the wild ungulates in Europe was put in evidence. On the contrary of canines and wild Felidae, the bears attack(affect) generally the vulnerable individuals.
