Dialogue anglais
Olivier : Hello everybody, and welcome at the Thursday tv show Ushuaia Nature and Agriculture! I’m Nicolas Hulot and we are together today to talk about the relation between agriculture and environment, with the Natura 2000 program. We choose Alsace for a region because of the corn culture problem, that’s why we’re going to debate with Valentino, an Italian corn farmer in Alsace and Phil Collins, the responsible of the Natura 2000 program of the territory.
So, hello Phil, can you please introduce yourself and your job?
Bejmin: Hello everybody, I’m Phil Collins, singer and responsible of the Natura 2000 in Alsace, more precisely at Borschwiller le Bas, and I take care of the negotiation of the contracts.
Olivier: Alright, and what about you Valentino ?
Rital: Hello, I’m Valentino and I’m a corn farmer at Borschwiller le Bas.
Olivier: So, explain to us Phil, what is the problem you meet in Alsace?
Bejmin: The problem is the next one, we are situated in a Natura 2000 area in which we have some specific protection for birds and habitats and the culture method of the farmers isn’t in accordance with the protection necessary for the birds and the habitats, because the farmers use an intensive method and knows that corn brings a lot of money, but they don’t take care about the water resources and they don’t go in the way of a sustainable development.
Rital: Wait a minute Mr. Phil Collins! We have a very difficult job and we’re obliged to adapt ourselves at the actually economic conditions, and we have to be the most profitable possible to provide for our needs and continue to live! The intensive agriculture is today the only way to bring enough money at home, and environment is unfortunately a second class problem for me.
Olivier: We understand you Valentino, but you don’t accord importance at a sustainable agriculture to insure the future year’s resources?
Rital: No!
Olivier : So, Phil, what can you suggest when you see this type of person?
