Problem
According to the French Observatory of discrimination, 64 % of the criteria involved for hiring (with equal competence and qualification) is directly related to the physical appearance of the candidate.
The first employment discrimination is disability, then comes obesity, age, sex and eventually the origin.
A- About handicap & obesity
According to surveys, one third of disabled people are unemployed, and 20 percent of disabled people are looking for a job. (this figure is declining but it is nevertheless important)
Only half of companies with more than 20 employees (which represent nearly one hundred thousand firms) are consistent with the law which compel them to hire at least 6 percent of disabled people. 23 percent of the companies prefer to pay a penalty (enhanced by the law of 2005) than hire disabled people.
Public Service of the State doesn't give the example because it employs only 3.69 percent of disable people!
Classic discrimination remain : Origins, physical, age … A recruiter doesn't hesitate to say clear and loud, « Big and ugly are bad for company's image. »
Persons discriminated against on their physical are an enormous number, but few of them complain. Only 0.72 percent of them covered claims to the High Authority for the Struggle against Discrimination and for Equality (HASDE).
